How to Import Gmail MBOX file Export Back into your Gmail account as well as G Suite (Google Apps)


Restoring all MBOX emails from the export back in to Gmail [import MBOX to Gmail] can be done easily without use of 3rd party software to import the archived MBOX file back in to Gmail. Please follow the below steps to restore all emails from an MBOX file back in to your Gmail account as well as G Suite (Google Apps).

Please read the instruction before restoring MBOX file to Gmail account:

  1. IMAP must be enabled on Google Account. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en
  2. User Account should not have 2-Steps Verification. https://www.google.com/landing/2step/
  3. Allow Less Secure Apps. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

Step 1: Set up & configure your Gmail account with Thunderbird

  1. Download and Install Thunderbird exe application version 52.9.1: https://filehippo.com/download_thunderbird/86215/
  2. After Launch Thunderbird and Create new setup with existing Gmail account
  3. Go to “Tools” on menu bar, then click on “Account Settings”.

  4. Click on “Account Actions” on below side, then click on “Add Mail Account
  5. Enter your Gmail name, Gmail email address, and Gmail password and click "Continue"
  6. Make sure IMAP is Enable and then click "Done"
  7. Thunderbird will automatically get all emails from Gmail account
  8. Now you will see your Gmail account in left-side of the screen and you can open it to see all your emails.
  9. Thunderbird is now properly set up for your Gmail account

Step 2: Install "ImportExportTools" Add-On for Thunderbird

  1. To download the "ImportExportTools" extension utility that works with Thunderbird, go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/
  2. On that page, Click on "Download Now" and Save the file the location where you saved the .xpi file.
  3. In Thunderbird, go to the menu bar, Click on “Tools” & then click on "Add-Ons"
  4. In the Add-ons Manager tab that opens, go to the"Gear icon", then "Install Add-on From File"
  5. Locate the .xpi file that you downloaded and follow the instructions prompted to install
  6. Restart Thunderbird

Step 3: Extract the zipped up Gmail email archive file provided to you

  1. Download and Extract Gmail archive file is in .ZIP file format.
  2. Extract the .zip file that you received. Once extracted, you will have several MBOX files which are each named according to the corresponding label in Gmail.

 Step 4: Import the emails from the MBOX file for the label that you want to restore

  1. In Thunderbird, import the MBOX file from a local folder; in the navigation pane on the left, right-mouse click "Local Folders" and Click on "New Folder" and enter name of folder as “gmail-mbox”
  2. After entering & creating New Folder name on “Local Folders”, right-mouse click on "New Folder Name" as gmail-mbox and then select "ImportExportTools" ->> "Import mbox file"
  3. Choose the option to "Import directly one or more mbox files" and select 'OK' button
  4. In the files browser, locate the folder where you extracted the Gmail mbox files to in location.  Select the mbox file that corresponds with the new folder that you want to restore and then click 'Open'
  5. All emails from that folder will now be importing. Please be patient, as it will take a while to load all of the emails.
  6. In the navigation pane on the left, right-mouse click on "markkt.soft@gmail.com" and Click on "New Folder" as Label name for Gmail and enter name of label as “gmail-mbox-new-file

 

Step 5: Copy the imported all emails into your Gmail Account

  1. In Thunderbird, in the navigation pane on the left, expand "Local Folders" and then select the folder below that has the name of the folder as “gmail-mbox” that you are importing all emails to Gmail
  2. In that folder select all of the emails contained in the folder, right-click the selection, and select 'Copy to ->> [gmail_account] ->> [label_name]'.
  • Note: gmail_account = the email address of your Gmail account
  • label_name = the path to the label that you want to import the restored emails to
  1. All emails will now be importing to the label that you choose. Please be patient, as it will take a while to upload all of the emails to Gmail.

Once this process is completed then you can log in of your Gmail account online and you should see all of the emails restored to the label that you chose in your Gmail account.
